Our Family & Our Ranch

Butcher Family

The Butcher family has been raising cattle in Montana since the homestead days before the great depression.  We are on our fourth generation here in Montana.  First in the Missouri breaks by Winifred, MT, then relocating to where we ranch today near Lewistown, MT, in the foothills of the Big Snowy Mountains. Our family has near 100 years of experience raising cattle and conserving our land.

Lucky Cross Beef

“Providing the highest quality beef available, while preserving the wildlife, land and lifestyle for generations to come,” is our mission here at Lucky Cross Beef. Lucky Cross Beef is the culmination of a family with deep roots of Montana cattle ranching heritage working to solve one common goal. Putting Montana born, bred, raised, and butchered beef into Montana beef consumers hands. The Butcher family has been working and using the same cattle genetics for many years.

Montana Beef

Lucky Cross started in 1994 when the Butcher family started tracking genetics for eating quality and health. Today we have the tools to show and educate consumers where their beef comes from, and how it reaches their tables. We want to break down walls and simplify the process. We do this by cutting out the large corporations, and ensuring that you know exactly where your beef comes from. This gives us the ability to deliver you a safer, and higher quality product, for a better value.

The Birth Of Lucky Cross

While we've been tracking genetics for decades, we haven't been able to get our beef processed locally. But in the year 2020, when the large processors shut down, we had to get creative. We partnered with a local processor and, for the first time, were able to get our beef into the hands of the local consumer! We were able to cut out the big packing houses, keep our product local, AND finally, get feedback from the end consumer. Our decades of labor had paid off in the best way possible!

Montana Raised

Our cattle spend most of their time on the Butcher family ranch where they are grazed in two primary locations throughout the year. During the summer and fall months our cattle graze the slopes and meadows of the Big Snowy Mountains. When the snow starts to fly we trail them down to our home place, where they winter on the hay fields and pastures. We keep them close to the barn in early spring, to keep a close eye on them as they have their calves. Our cattle and land are our livelihood. Our family spends every day of the year committed to doing what’s best for our cattle.

Our Mission

“Providing the highest quality beef available, while preserving the wildlife, land, and lifestyle for generations to come.”
